Word came down a few hours ago that David Letterman married his long (long, long, long) term girlfriend Regina Lasko last Thursday in Montana, where the couple and their son Harry live while the rest of us are watching Late Show reruns.
He announced the nuptials during the today’s taping. The details are plentiful online (305 articles and growing on Google News), but tonight’s show is something that absolutely must be watched.
Letterman is an amazing storyteller. For a guy who seems to get crankier with age, his recounting of personal moments in his life are not just Tivo-worthy, but save-worthy and watch-repeatedly-for-years-worthy. His return after quadruple bypass surgery? Gracefully triumphant. The birth of his son Harry? Touching, but not saccharine. His interview with ex-girlfriend Merill Markoe ‘97? Awkwardly nostalgic.
Somewhere in a box I have a VHS tape labeled simply “Letterman bear story” that I will never tape over. Watch this and tell me there’s a better storyteller on television:
Colbert is in repeats, there’s no NCAA basketball to make the schedule run late, and Hugh Laurie is the first guest. There’s no reason not to watch Dave tonight.

Oh, man… that video was amazing…
I understand that Letterman is an institution over there, but he just isn’t that big of a deal over here, so I’ve never really understood why he’s held in such high regard (I realise that sounds quite insulting, but you understand that it’s nothing to do with him, it’s just the lack of exposure over here…) but having seen that… I want to watch more…
Damn you, woman!!!
